Poetry - Who Invented The Poem?
I have a love-hate relationship with poetry. I find it incredibly difficult to write well -
to me that means without pretension.
Sometimes, rarely, you skewer an image or feeling with very very few words and it works,
whereas the novel requires thousands of them to tell the story.
I love Sappho, one of the first poets ever - a lyric poet, fragments of her verse have survived
and they are possibly more beautiful for being fragmentary. this is a favourite -
'Like a sweet-apple
turning red
high
on the tip
of the topmost branch.
Forgotten by pickers.
Not forgotten—
they couldn’t reach it.'
